Trying Trump Times

Trump is a prisoner of his own pathology and so are we. It would be in his interest to back down on separating parents and kids but he can’t admit to a mistake and he can’t tolerate being wrong. This is about mental illness not policy.

Every day Trump pushes the boundaries of basic human decency a little further, to test whether he can get away with it. When he does, he keeps pushing. Separating children from their parents and putting them in cages won't be the end of it. How long before he starts mass arrests?

To Republican legislators: If you oppose Kim Jung Un and Putin, you must now stand up to Trump. He deeply admires and envies these men and fully intends to emulate their behavior as soon as he's certain you won't oppose him. Time is running out. The whole world is watching.

WARNING: Trump is working every day to test democracy, overrun the rule of law, emulate role models Kim Jung Un and Putin. If he can get away with it, he will suspend a free press, accelerate his kleptocracy and begin eliminating opponents. He will stop at nothing. This is no joke.

I'm pretty sure none of us horrified by the separation of children from parents at our border care more about foreigners than our fellow citizens. But if the idea we should strive to treat foreigners decently is to be an object of scorn, I'll wear that scorn as a badge of honor.

How Congress can begin to redeem itself: Pass clean legislation (some version of Cruz or Feinstein) that stops the separation of kids from parents and moves to reunite families. Do so this week. With veto-proof majorities. As for the Trump administration: It can’t redeem itself.

It seems that whenever pro-Trump pundits are now confronted with the harsh realities of the policies they promote, the only explanation they can find is to accuse of the other side of "acting."
