Layers of Cedar Wood Chips Form Realistic Siberian Wildlife - My Modern Metropolis

Layers of Cedar Wood Chips Form Realistic Siberian Wildlife

Walking into artist Sergey Bobkov's studio must be like walking into a jungle! The Russian sculptor creates all kinds of life-like creatures out of Siberian cedar wood chips and a very skillful hand. He says, “It’s not too interesting to do what others can. To create something out of nothing in a completely new way is far more inspiring.”
To start, Bobkov first chips off strips of the Cedar, each piece averaging about 2-3 inches long, and soaks the wood in water. He then hand carves the pieces to fit the texture and shape of each of his animal friends. In order to build accurate depictions of an animal, Bobkov will spend time studying the anatomy, habits, and movements of each creature before beginning a new project. The results of his hard work are these spectacular and quite realistic creations.
Bobkov spends 10-12 hours a day working on a sculpture, and each piece can take months to complete. In total, the artist has made 15 life-sized wooden sculptures featuring Siberian wildlife, and we can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

Carnival 2013 | Wodu Media

Pre-Lenten celebrations around the globe, including Carnival and Mardi Gras, wrapped up yesterday before the marking of Ash Wednesday today. Historians say the tradition dates back to Roman times, when the newly converted Christians retained vestiges of their pagan festival, “Lupercalia,” as a period of celebration before the penance during the 40 days of Lent. — Lloyd Young ( 46 photos total)

Kumbh Mela: The Largest Gathering On Earth

Tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims are now descending on Allahabad, India, joining an estimated 8 million already there for the Maha Kumbh Mela. Held every 12 years at one of four places in India, the Kumbh Mela lasts nearly two months and is considered to be an especially auspicious time to bathe in the holy river for purification from sin. In 2001, the last time the festival took place, more than 40 million people gathered in an area smaller than 20 sq km (7.7 sq mi). This year, the predicted number of visitors tops 100 million. Collected here are images from the preparation and first days of the Maha Kumbh Mela, with possibly more to come in the next few weeks.
