Pilot ejects before Jet crashes during last seconds of an FA18 aircraft in crash mode

Incredible photos from last Friday's accident in Canada (Lethbridge).  Check out the sequence of the canopy leaving the scene, the pilot in his rocket-powered seat coming out, the parachute opening sequence, and the separated seat falling away.  Modern technology at its best.  All of this happened in about two seconds from canopy off to the fireball.

cid:A09F22A5589D47009AA4C0779BEB8727@FranksPC

Check out all the smoke from the canopy rocket motors.

cid:ED15CAD9C9D54F6BB5335838AA2D39C6@FranksPC
There he goes!  So that's what the striped handle does!

The left engine has the nozzle fully open, showing that #1 engine was developing no power.

cid:F858878EAC9F45B4A99034CED9D57A35@FranksPC

The white thing is the seat-stabilazing drogue chute.  Notice the pilot's head pinned to his chest from the severe 'G' forces produced by the solid rocket motors in the ACES II seat.  They burn for about 2/10ths of a second . . enough time to propel him at least 60 feet clear of the aircraft.  Helluva ride.

cid:90B9612EA66541AAA1C1F8FDEC1A7DEA@FranksPC

One millisecond from eternity for a beautiful FA-18.  Check out the now-unoccupied ejection seat following the aircraft to glory.

cid:4DE952C6F003466080D84FF6D0922A85@FranksPC

The moment-of-impact photo shows flame shooting out of the left engine . . its 'last gasp'.  There goes the seat above the fireball.
The pilot will be downing his first of several shots within the hour, soon as his hands stop shaking.

cid:10016A8A3005471CB5247FD88A86E487@FranksPC

And the pilot lived happily ever after . . .

P.S. The pilot is now a member of the " Martin Baker fan club"!  Martin Baker is the company that makes the ejection seats!  Every one that punchs out becomes a member and gets a Club tie.

Why is Bill Gates' foundation investing in private prison companies?

Why is Bill Gates' foundation investing in private prison companies?

You won't believe the companies Bill Gates' foundation invests in.

ExxonMobil, Walmart, and McDonald's are just a few of the companies that the mega-charity supports.

With an endowment larger than all but four of the world's largest hedge funds, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is easily one of the most powerful charities in the world. According to its website, the organization "works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives." So how do the investments of the foundation's $36 billion investing arm, the Gates Foundation Trust, match up to its mission?

In its most recent annual report to investors, private prison company GEO group listed some risks to its bottom line, including "reductions in crime rates" that "could lead to reductions in arrests, convictions and sentences," along with immigration reform and the decriminalization of drugs.

Military contractor DynCorp, meanwhile, has faced allegations of fraud, mismanagement, and even slavery from the Middle East to Eastern Europe.

Growing pot indoors is a major environmental problem

Environmental wariness and outdoor cultivation will be key for future legal marijuana production in Colorado

When recreational marijuana use becomes legal in Colorado on  January 1 , medical retailers expect demand to increase by 400 per cent. Increasing supply to meet that demand will carry with it dramatic economic and environmental costs.

The monthly energy bill for River Rock, a medical marijuana retailer with two dispensaries and a warehouse in the Denver area, exceeds $21,000. According to John Kocer, one of River Rock’s owners, that’s nothing: one of his competitors pays a monthly bill of $100,000 for its warehouse operation.

In Colorado and elsewhere in the U.S., the pot industry generates more than enough revenue to pay its bills. The environmental cost of doing business, though, is a different matter.

In 2011, a study by researcher Evan Mills at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory showed indoor marijuana production accounting for 1 per cent of national electricity production, using $6 billion worth of energy per year, and creating greenhouse gas pollution equivalent to that of 3 million cars.

Faced with the rapid growth of those numbers, the City of Boulder put into place the kind of environmental regulation ordinarily associated with corporate polluters. Boulder requires marijuana growers to purchase wind or solar energy, or to buy carbon offsets. That increases marijuana growing costs by an estimated 20 per cent.

River Rock’s new 18,000 square foot greenhouse will primarily use solar power, rather than artificial lights.

“Our primary goal,”  Kocer told CBS Denver, “is to lower our costs as much as possible and pass it on to our patients.”

Outdoor cultivation is more energy—and cost—efficient, of course, but as long as marijuana is illegal on the federal level, we can expect indoor growers to increase their market share.
A 2009  Justice Department assessment of domestic cannabis cultivation makes it plain: the primary advantage of indoor cultivation is to avoid detection, arrest, and eradication by authorities. But chasing the industry indoors as a matter of procedure and policy has its own, increasing environmental impact.

In Boulder, City Councilman Macon Cowles is proud of his city’s efforts to lessen the industry’s emissions.

“The marijuana is greener in Boulder,” he says.
How green the greenhouses prove may be an important part of Colorado’s legalization process.
