John Wooden: "Details create success"
"Atul Gawande’s Askwith Forum talk covered observations from sports and music, as well as anecdotes from his career — including his experience working with a surgical coach. In addition to suggesting some technical changes (like changing the position of his elbow), the coach also 'pointed out the ways I’d missed opportunities to help the team perform better,' Gawande said. After making changes and re-focusing on small details, 'I saw my complication rates go down.'” - Harvard Gazette
Atul Gawande is a physician and journalist. He serves as a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and associate director of their Center for Surgery and Public Health. He is also an associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He writes on medicine and public health for The New Yorker and Slate and is the author of the books Complications, Better, and The Checklist Manifesto.
