Triumph of the Will by Leni Riefenstahl

Triumph of the Will From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph...

Triumph of the Will (German: Triumph des Willens) is a 1935 propaganda film directed, produced, edited and co-written by Leni Riefenstahl.

It chronicles the 1934 Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg, which was attended by more than 700,000 Nazi supporters. The film contains excerpts from speeches given by Nazi leaders at the Congress, including Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Hess and Julius Streicher, interspersed with footage of massed Sturmabteilung and Schutzstaffel troops and public reaction. Hitler commissioned the film and served as an unofficial executive producer; his name appearing in the opening titles. The film's overriding theme is the return of Germany as a great power, with Hitler as the leader who will bring glory to the nation. Because the film was made after the 1934 Night of the Long Knives (on June 30) many prominent Sturmabteilung (SA) members are absent since they were murdered in that Party purge organized and orchestrated by Hitler to replace the SA with the Schutzstaffeln (SS) as his main paramilitary force. Triumph of the Will was released in 1935 and became a prominent example of propaganda in film history. Riefenstahl's techniques—such as moving cameras, aerial photography, the use of long focus lenses to create a distorted perspective, and the revolutionary approach to the use of music and cinematography—have earned Triumph of the Will recognition as one of the greatest propaganda films in history. Riefenstahl helped to stage the scenes, directing and rehearsing some of them at least fifty times. Riefenstahl won several awards, not only in Germany but also in the United States, France, Sweden, and other countries. The film was popular in the Third Reich, and has continued to influence movies, documentaries, and commercials to this day. However, it is banned from showing in Germany owing to its support for Nazism and its numerous portrayals of the swastika. An earlier film by Riefenstahl—Der Sieg des Glaubens—showed Hitler and SA leader Ernst Röhm together at the 1933 Nazi party congress. After Röhm's murder, the party attempted the destruction of all copies, leaving only one known to have survived in Britain. This can be viewed at the Internet Archive. The direction and sequencing of images is almost the same as that Riefenstahl used in Triumph of the Will a year later.

The National Republican Senate Committee and Montana Senate candidate Matt Rosendale both compared the poster to the now-infamous photo of the comedian Kathy Griffin holding a fake decapitated Trump head.

Republicans blast Pearl Jam poster of burning White House

HELENA, Mont.

Republicans on Wednesday condemned a poster by Pearl Jam that shows the White House in flames and a bald eagle pecking at a skeleton they say is meant to depict President Donald Trump.
The National Republican Senate Committee compared it to the now-infamous photo of comedian Kathy Griffin holding a fake decapitated Trump head.
The rock group’s Twitter account says the official poster from Monday’s concert in Missoula, Montana, is a collaboration between bassist Jeff Ament and Bobby Brown, an artist also known as Bobby Draws Skulls.
The “Rock2Vote” concert aimed to encourage young people to vote in the November midterm elections and support Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester of Montana, who is from Ament’s hometown of Big Sandy.

Read more here: https://www.kansascity.com/latest-news/article216732145.html#storylink=cpy
Ament was unapologetic in an emailed statement Wednesday.
“The role of the artist is to make people think and feel, and the current administration has us thinking and feeling,” Ament said in the statement. “I was the sole conceptualist of this poster, and I welcome all interpretations and discourse.”
He ended the statement, “Love, from the First Amendment, Jeff Ament.”
The poster shows Tester in a tractor flying over a burning Washington, D.C., framed by the letters “P’‘ and “J,” with smoke forming the word “Vote” in the background.
Several objects and people are in the foreground, including a skeleton with a full head of hair lying face down, an eagle pecking at the bones of its foot.
Tester’s Republican opponent, Montana State Auditor Matt Rosendale, also is depicted with a crab claw for a hand and carrying a “Maryland” flag, a reference to Rosendale’s native state.
The message from Ament accompanying the poster included the description: “D.C. burning. Tester Evel Knievel on tractor ... over the cesspool below. Russian money, golf courses, hookers? Maryland Matt. Stars and Stripes as flames.”
Rosendale called the poster “disgusting and reprehensible” and called on Tester to “denounce this act of violence and blatant display of extremism.”
The National Republican Senate Committee, which is supporting Rosendale’s campaign, also blamed Tester for not speaking out against the poster it called “gory.” The committee compared it to other examples of public figures “encouraging violence” against Trump, like Griffin’s photo.

Tester officials said the campaign had nothing to do with the poster.

“We never saw the poster before the show and we don’t like it,” Tester spokesman Chris Meagher said. “And we don’t condone violence of any kind.”

Related stories from Kansas City Star

Ament told The Associated Press in April that the band wanted to use the Montana concert to support local advocacy groups, encourage voter participation and boost Tester’s campaign. He said he believed that the political climate had become too divisive.

“Probably more than ever it’s important to have a congressman that can sort of make people think less emotionally about some of these things,” he said.

Trump Blocks Fighter Jet Transfer Amid Deepening U.S.-Turkey Rift

Reading this account of Trump's deal making highlights the danger of rash decisions, like tarrifs on steel and aluminum or sourcing some key components of the F-35...

Trump is not being a more fair ally to his fascist friends than he is to Canada or Europe.  Good luck with air base:
Incirlik Air Base has a U.S. Air Force complement of about five thousand airmen, with several hundred airmen from the Royal Air Force and Turkish Air Force also present, as of late 2002.

The primary unit stationed at Incirlik Air Base is the 39th Air Base Wing (39 ABW) of the U.S. Air Force.

Incirlik Air Base has one 3,048 m (10,000 ft)-long runway, located among about 57 hardened aircraft shelters.
Tactical nuclear weapons are stored at the base.

Trump Blocks Fighter Jet Transfer Amid Deepening U.S.-Turkey Rift

The decision is a blow to Ankara but could also complicate matters for Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed into law a defense policy bill that will hold up the transfer to Turkey of 100 F-35 fighter jets, deepening a rift between the two countries over the ongoing imprisonment of an American pastor in Turkey.

The move amounts to a sharp blow to Ankara, which is already reeling from Trump’s decision last week to double down on tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel.

Turkey planned to take possession of the jets over the next decade, which would make it the third-largest operator of F-35s in the world.

But its cancellation will also complicate matters for the United States.

Several key components of the jet are manufactured by Turkish companies, and the U.S. Defense Department estimates it will take two years to find and qualify new suppliers to replace any Turkish firms that are kicked out of the program.

Meanwhile, the main European hub for the F-35’s engine repair and overhaul is in Eskisehir, in northwestern Turkey.

Turkey jailed the American pastor, Andrew Brunson, almost two years ago in a widespread crackdown that followed a military coup attempt.

Ankara maintains that Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, had ties to the plotters.

For a time, it seemed the Trump administration would reach a deal to defuse tensions and secure Brunson’s release.

But the talks are said to have fallen apart in the past month.

Now Trump, who has been personally engaged in cultivating the U.S.-Turkey relationship, feels betrayed and wants retribution, analysts said.

“Trump … did want to make things nice with Turkey, and he by all accounts invested personally in the relationship,” said Aaron Stein, an expert on Turkey with the Atlantic Council.

“Now that he feels like the Turks have reneged on an agreement that they reached with him, the U.S. position is now an ultimatum.”

The Turkish Embassy in Washington did not respond to questions about the decision.

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, writing in the New York Times over the weekend, warned that Trump’s punitive measures against Turkey would ultimately backfire on the United States.

“At a time when evil continues to lurk around the world, unilateral actions against Turkey by the United States, our ally of decades, will only serve to undermine American interests and security,” Erdogan wrote in an opinion piece.

“Failure to reverse this trend of unilateralism and disrespect will require us to start looking for new friends and allies.”

So far, the spat has mainly harmed Ankara.
Trump’s tariff increases on aluminum and steel, which he announced via Twitter and which effectively priced Turkey out of the U.S. market, sent Turkish lira tumbling to a new low on Friday.

“I hate [that] it came to this point, but President @realDonaldTrump really had no other choice,” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham wrote in a Friday tweet.

But senior U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, have warned against removing Turkey from the F-35 program.

Ankara is a critical geopolitical partner and cornerstone of the NATO alliance, and the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey is a key launching pad for operations in the Middle East, particularly the campaign against the Islamic State

It is also home to a U.S. stockpile of B61 nuclear bombs, a linchpin of nuclear deterrence in Europe.

Ankara is also a crucial partner in rebuilding Syria as the West, Russia, and Iran jockey for power in the war-torn nation.

The sale of the F-35 to Turkey is particularly controversial, because Ankara also plans to purchase the sophisticated Russian-built S-400 missile system.

Officials say integration of the S-400 with the F-35 and NATO air defenses could compromise closely guarded U.S. and allied military secrets.

“Unfortunately, we now have the egos of both leaders engaged,
and that makes it difficult to finesse the situation,”
said Loren Thompson, an analyst with the Lexington Institute, a think tank that receives funding from Lockheed Martin, among other defense contractors.

The language Trump signed into law on Monday, included in a $717 billion bill that sets defense policy for the year, is watered down from its original form and mostly symbolic regarding Turkey.

But it sets the stage for congressional appropriators to take more decisive action.

The legislation blocks the transfer of F-35s to Turkey until the Pentagon submits an impact assessment, particularly regarding U.S. military operations from Incirlik Air Base but also focusing on overall U.S.-Turkish relations.

Lawmakers also want the Pentagon to assess the ramifications of Ankara’s planned purchase of the S-400 system.

A provision in a draft version of the defense appropriations bill, which is expected to move forward in the next few weeks, would expressly prohibit funding for the transfer.

Turkey has been a very longstanding ally.  Putin is pushing for the break up of NATO and these actions look like Trump is doing Putin's bidding.  Were these actions discussed in Helsinki?

NATO is an international alliance that consists of 29 member states from North America and ... and the United States.

In 1952, Greece and Turkey became members of the Alliance, joined later by West Germany (in 1955) and Spain (in 1982).

Trump-Putin Summit Is Over. The Head-Scratching? Not So Much.

Asked whether he believes his own intelligence agencies, which say that Russia interfered in the 2016 United States election, or Mr. Putin, who denies it, Mr. Trump refused to say, but he expressed doubt about whether Russia was to blame.

“They think it’s Russia,” he said. “I have President Putin — he just said it’s not Russia. I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

Should we start to worry???  Was this a demo to counter Trump and Putin aggressive sabre rattling?

An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile launches during an operational test at 2:10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, U.S., August 2, 2017.

China just tested a hypersonic weapon the US can’t defend against

By Steve Mollman

August 7, 2018

China has successfully tested a new hypersonic aircraft that would likely make a mockery of US missile defense systems in battle.

The experimental “waverider” vehicle, China’s first, rides the shock waves generated during hypersonic flight.

It could one day carry multiple nuclear warheads.

According to state media reports published yesterday, the test was in northwestern China last Friday.

The Starry Sky 2 was first carried airborne by a solid-propellant rocket.

After separation, it glided back down to earth at speeds reaching 7,344 km per hour (4,563 mph), displaying a high degree of maneuverability along the way.

The US’s existing missile defense systems, criticized for their high price and spotty track record, struggle to intercept more conventional projectiles, much less hypersonic aircraft, which travel in a less predictable manner and are hard to detect.

This is the first time China has officially confirmed its development of “waverider” technology, though it has been working on hypersonic glide vehicles since 2014. China, Russia, and the US are the main contenders in the hypersonic arena, and are engaged in what some see as a new arms race based on the technology.

The US Missile Defense Agency asked for $120 million in its 2019 budget to develop hypersonic missile defenses, up from $75 million in this year’s.

Admiral Harry Harris, former head of the US Pacific Command and now the ambassador to South Korea, said in February, “China’s hypersonic weapons development outpaces ours… we’re falling behind.”

In March, air force general John Hyten, commander of US Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee, “We don’t have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon against us.”

The New York Times' publisher fired back at Trump's tweet about their "fake news" meeting.

  • By Hayley Miller, HuffPost US

“I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous,"

A.G. Sulzberger said in a statement Sunday

On July 20, Sulzberger and James Bennet, the editor of the Times’ editorial page, met with Trump at the White House, according to Murphy. Though Trump’s aides requested the meeting be off the record, Trump’s tweet Sunday put the meeting “on the record,” allowing for Sulzberger to respond, she said.

“My main purpose for accepting the meeting was to raise concerns about the president’s deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric,” Sulzberger said in a statement to HuffPost. “I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.”

“I made clear repeatedly that I was not asking for him to soften his attacks on The Times if he he felt our coverage was unfair,” he added. “Instead, I implored him to reconsider his broader attacks on journalism, which I believe are dangerous and harmful to our country.”

Trump often accuses the Times and other media outlets, including The Washington Post, CNN and NBC, of publishing false stories in response to articles that portray him in an unflattering manner.

misinformation spreads, what causes it to spread so fast, and who—or
what—is spreading it.

It is the largest study of its kind about fake news and is featured in
Science, “The Spread of True and False News Online”,  March 9, 2018.

Tim O’Reilly, the founder, CEO, and Chairman of O’Reilly Media, and the

About Me

My photo
Robert Lewis and Jennifer Hodson
Jennifer believes we live in the garden of Eden and I believe that we are destroying it. Our saving grace is within ourselves, our faith, and our mindfulness. We need to make a conscious effort to respect and preserve all life.
